There is nothing more frightful than ignorance in action. Johann von Goethe.
When I consider a Graffiti Writer, I always judge the man before the artist. But if I should judge the artist only, I would judge him 50% for his creativity and 50% for his Graffiti culture. Graffiti is oral history passed on by old generations to new generations and it carries on legends, myths, rules and motivations that constitute its roots. These roots are its lifeblood, the reason that makes you different from any other street artist. These roots dont make you better than any other artist out there, but they are the secret ingredient that art-critics will never understand or learn: ’cause you must leave as a Writer to absorb them. You can love or hate these roots, you can be an innovator, but you must know them.
In 1992 my blockbuster was playing Business Never Personal and in the meantime Metallica’s black album. I was painting graffiti since a few years but writers were still looking at me like some strange cat for the only reason I was listening to hardcore and metal together with rap music (that same year, Body Count LP by Ice-T was published and a lot of people just shut up). Things that make me smile today… we were kids and it was a different world.
But while music was down with me in every moment of my life, the only blockbuster I ever painted in my life is the one you see here. I just wanted to paint a real classic graffiti piece, and this spot near our hall of fame in Giambellino was perfect ’cause everybody comin’ to check out new productions would have been hitted by my blockbuster too, it was big enough! I remember doin it alone on a foggy-depressing Sunday afternoon. This place was my playground but it also could be a wasteland, typically I just used to park my car near the wall, open the doors turn-on the music and paint!
Normally, we run the Family Business’ crew jam once in a year, as it’s not so easy to move a lot of people from deep south Europe to extreme north and viceversa. Howether, the 2008 has been a really lucky year and after a first spring jam in Milano, we later moved to Norway just before winter started to hit hard the scandinavian ground.
It’s been a crazy week-end and amongst parties, clubs, riverside brunches and luxury dinners we even found a little time to paint some burners… check out the complete report down here! (more…)
This photo was shotted by Alberto Scabbia and it features me and Rendo just before entering the theatre that was hosting the event. We drived straight from Milano to Frankfurt and later we just slept in the car. The event, organized and managed by Bomber, was amazing.
Some of the best euro hip hop heads were down in the show. Me and Alberto got for free a small stand where to sell Tribe Magazine: italian graffiti scene was still looking a little bit exhotic for the rest of Europe and our magazine packed with only italian stuff was really a big surprise for everybody. Just imagine that to our right there was Futura‘s stand, to our left Delta‘s stand and in front of us ModeTwo‘s stand (I still own a nice t-shirt I bought from him that night!). On the main stage rappers, DJs and breakers were battling and on the different theatre’s floors some of the best writers were exhibiting their artworks. I never had seen graffiti writing on canvases before and I was impressed by the quality and precision you could achieve: they were different but they were beautiful!
Many years later when I had the opportunity to manage my first event, all these images were still in my mind and they setted the standard I wanted to reach.
I really miss those time painting with my old friend Clock. This fast piece is just one of many I painted with the support of Barrio‘s. In my opinion Barrios is one of the few community centers doin’ a really good job in the abandoned suburbs of Milano.
