Aerosol Sushi by Stefano Bombardieri, Airone, KayOne, Atomo, Thero - Milano 1996
Stefano Bombardieri is fantastic artist whose artworks you can see here. In 2006 he created a beautiful work entitled “Gaia and the Whale”, made up of a little girl who pulls a whale with a rope (admire it here). Little girl and whale have both actual size. This work has been exhibited on several occasions and locations, until it has landed in Milan at the center of the dock on Navigli, on a large barge built for the occasion.

In 2006 I started a nice collaboration – that continues to this day – with the associations of Navigli canals, and just by a hint of these, I had the crazy idea to ask Stefano if I could paint his sculpture. The idea was very simple: paint the whale at night and the day after wait for the inevitable controversy about the writers who have no respect for anything and illegally damage monuments. Only then reveal to the public the fact that the whole operation was coordinated and that, as usual, politics and media have opened their mouth only to give breath to prejudices.

Erba by Airone - Milano 1993 Even if you’re young as I was when I painted this piece (THP hall of fame in Via Giambellino), no type of weed (or anything else) will help you to forget your pains. There’s only one way: go through them and get stronger.

Chart by Airone - Milano 21.6.1993

During an inexplicable burst of openness to the few writers in the city, in 1993 the city of Milano entrusted to some of them the task of improving the old and dilapidated walls of public outdoor pools. Each artist painted what he wanted, even according to the quantity of colors: some (like my case) very few, for others (hey Marco, remember?) hundreds. Although to be honest, only a small part of all those wack colors (Very Well Spray) ended up decorating the pools…

The idea of this piece came looking at a couple of works painted by Shad. Light years away for those times, they had a strange concatenation of transparent letters that had fascinated me. Inspired by that idea, I translated it in my own way. In this piece the letters had yet a flat, broad outline that had been a classic ’till those days, and that was starting to disappear or evolve in a more dynamic one, as it is evident here.

During this time I also had improved the handwriting of my signatures, which finally started to seem that of a real writer.

Stop Crime by Airone - Milano 1991

Stop Crime by Airone - Milano 1991This is the first large piece that I painted on a wall, about 9 meters x 4 meters inside my school, the Liceo Classico Manzoni in Milano. Before, the walls were completely ruined since decades and on my proposal the headmaster give me a small amount of money to buy enough paint (at that time, a luxury that I rarely could afford).

Stop Crime by Airone - Milano 1991 The space was high but long and narrow, hence the impossibility of an overall decent photo (which in any case my poor camera would have spoiled). I remember it was Easter, everyone was away for holidays and instead I was locked inside the school to paint: like all normal teenagers at that time…

Graffiti were still a rarity in Milano and at the return from holidays the piece did not fail to surprise everyone.

At least, that’s what I liked to believe.

            Airone MastroK - Milano 1995

Explosive hot day in an almost secret spot in Lambrate… a nice jam mixing a lot of flavors: my bros Yazo and MastroK, Styng 253 from TGF, Mask, Amok and Lark from ZN13, Shot from CKC and possibly someone else I dont remember…
The day went on till late night grilling, drinking white wines and painting… but mostly grilling and drinking. The few who had forgot sunscreen protections are still bleeding…

It’s been fun with great positive vibes, different oldschool crews (TGF, THP, ZN13, CKC) together in perfect harmony, just magic! A classic Milano’s graffiti hall of fame from back in the days.
